The Disability Rights Education & Defense Fund (DREDF) in Berkeley, California, seeks an attorney with one to eight years of experience to help develop and litigate cutting-edge cases that advance the rights of people with disabilities, and to support DREDF’s advocacy work in promoting the civil rights and freedoms of people with disabilities.
The DREDF is a leading national center for disability civil rights law and policy led by people with disabilities and parents of children with disabilities. Our mission is to advance the civil and human rights of people with disabilities through legal advocacy, training, education, public policy and legislative development. The DREDF staff includes seven lawyers, two political analysts and other professionals.
Our advocacy priorities include defending and promoting the rights of persons with disabilities in: education; access to government programs and services; lodging; Health care; transportation; Technology; parenthood and the dependency system; and self-determination and decision-making. We strive to enforce the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, Americans with Disabilities Act, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, Section 1557 of the Affordable Care Act, Amendments to the Act fair housing and other civil rights laws.
In all areas of society, we are committed to upholding Olmstead and its principles, including for people with psychiatric and intellectual disabilities and people with disabilities involved in the criminal justice system.
Applicants should have excellent legal research, analytical, and writing skills, and a strong commitment to civil rights and civil rights litigation. Experience in public interest law, particularly in the area of disability rights, is preferred. Membership in the California Bar is required, but this requirement may be deferred for a reasonable period, at the discretion of DREDF, to allow a new recruit to take and pass the California Bar exam.
The DREDF has a salary grid which determines the remuneration of lawyers. The full-time salary for this position (one to eight years of experience) ranges from $68,500 to $93,000.
