If you suffer from periodontal (gum) disease, did you know that your overall health is compromised?
93% of adults suffer from gingivitis or periodontitis, two stages of gum disease.
Periodontal (gum) disease is an infection of the gums in the mouth that can destroy bone. If periodontal disease is not treated properly, it could lead to tooth loss and more.
Not only can periodontal (gum) disease lead to tooth loss, but there is also a link between gum disease and general health problems. Bacteria in the mouth can spread to other parts of the body and cause secondary problems.
Having periodontal (gum) disease makes you 50% more likely to have a heart attack, 47% more likely to have a stroke, and 35% more likely to develop kidney, pancreatic or liver cancer. It is a chronic inflammatory disease that puts people at higher risk of developing osteoporosis, heart disease, stroke, diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, respiratory disease, cancer of the pancreas/kidney and low birth weight/preterm birth in women.
This is because the bacteria that cause periodontal (gum) disease can actively enter the circulation and become trapped in many organs and tissues.
Do you have periodontal (gum) disease?
Have you noticed the following signs and symptoms: red or swollen gums, bleeding gums, bad breath or persistent taste, loose teeth, gums that have come away from the teeth?
