Aligarh: On the occasion of “National Dentist’s Day” (March 6), the Department of Periodontics and Community Dentistry, ZA Dental college AMU organized an oral health treatment camp at the district prison of Aligarh. Aligarh, 07-03-2022. The camp was organized for jail prisoners who were currently in the district jail. In this camp, awareness has spread about the signs and symptoms of oral cancer and the long-term harmful effects of tobacco use. An examination of the oral cavity was carried out in the patients. Treating physicians and interns also raised awareness of the importance of oral hygiene and oral care.

About 556 patients were diagnosed with various oral health related problems and under the collaboration of the Department of Conservative and Endodontics and the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, 28 patients received non-surgical extractions and 44 patients received permanent restorations, 5 patients also showed signs and symptoms of oral cancer.

Most of the patients diagnosed suffered from dental caries and poor oral hygiene. Oral hygiene instructions were given verbally to each patient at diagnosis and brushing technique was also explained using a model and brush.

The program was guided by Prof. RK Tiwari (Principal ZADC, AMU) under the supervision of Prof. Vivek Kumar Sharma (Chair), Prof. Neha Agarwal, Prof. Dr. GS Hashmi, Prof. SK Mishra, Dr. Pramod Kumar Yadav and by Dr. Syed Amaan Ali.

Trainees assigned to the department actively participated in the successful implementation of the program.
