Premier League rivals Norwich City confirm new boss appointment

Norwich City have confirmed Dean Smith’s appointment as new manager.

Smith was only sacked from his post at Aston Villa eight days ago, but he moved quickly to secure his next managerial position with the Canaries.

Norwich had narrowed his search down to both Smith and Frank Lampard, but with the latter withdrawing from the race last week, the former Villa boss put his pen to a two-and-a-half-year contract.

Despite securing his first league win of the season before the international break, with a 2-1 victory at Brentford, former manager Daniel Farke was dismissed from his post more than a week ago after a bad start to the season.

After more than three years at the helm of his boyhood club Villa, Smith saw his three-year stint in the West Midlands end with a five-game losing streak in the league.

Smith had a mostly successful time at Villa Park, earning a promotion through the play-offs in his first season in the dugout.

He then guided them to safety through the skins of their teeth, before a much more promising 11 e placed on arrival last time.

The 50-year-old will bring his new side to face Leeds United at Elland Road on March 12, which will be his fifth meeting with Marcelo Bielsa as manager.

So far, Bielsa has had the best of their clashes, securing two wins, including Leeds’ 3-0 win at Villa Park at the start of last season.
